Owner's Comments:
Of all the Washington-Franklins, the two perforation 10 issues are the toughest ones to complete at the highest grade in used condition. The perf 10 setting means that perfs are often short or nibbled. Not only that but Jumbo copies are far more scarce. The average of 'J' suffixes attached to my Perf 11 and 12 stamps is 58%. To the perf 10 stamps it is a mere 18%. I believe it is far more challenging to find Washington Franklin stamps in superb used condition than it is to find them superb unused mint og. Unused, they seem to proliferate in far higher grades than their used counterparts - probably because they were collected at issue far more vigorously than they were collected used. My view is that a Superb 98 used is generally rather more scarce to obtain than an unused NH Superb 98 of the same denomination. I got hooked on Washington/Franklin stamps as a child. They were cheap and dealers in shops often had hundreds through which one could sort. Perhaps it was then that I learnt that even a cheap stamp could be beautiful and worthy of attention when in perfect condition and appearance. I regret that dealers nowadays rarely carry such material because it brings so little profit - so there is not much available for fledgling collectors to obtain cheap fun. Does Ebay offer a substitute? Not in my view. It is the dealer with the knowledge directly advising the beginner which has the greatest influence and encouragement.
