Nick Kirke Collection - 2nd Finest Set of All Time1893 Columbian with Varieties (Used)
Owner's Comments: PSE list no less than 4 various Columbian used sets in their Registry Listings and I think they thoroughly deserve such exposure. I remember as a schoolboy dreaming of owning a one dollar Columbian in ANY condition. They never appeared in approval packets and rarely in provincial stamp shops in the UK. We stamp collectors are frequently derided by Postal Historians who claim, with some justification perhaps, that their passion dealing with routes and ratings and all the other postmark paraphinalia is far more challenging than collecting off cover stamps. To my mind, the Columbian Issue prove otherwise. Not only is it exceptionally tough to assemble a complete set in attractive and sound condition but each stamp provides a small pastiche of history. I believe as a set they are the glamour pussies of ALL U.S. stamps. Wonderful colours with intricate designs, they remain a fantastic advertisement and inducement to attract young and older collectors to the fold. Experience will show that the 8c value is just about the toughest to find with large margins, that the 2 dollar is tougher to find XF than it's catalogue value suggests and that the 4 dollar pale analine rose is significantly rarer that it's cousin the crimson lake although the catalogue values make little or no distinction. My dream? To own a used 4c blue error of colour well centred and sound. Probably I will have pushed up several seasons of daisies before this event occurs - assuming that the ghosts of Nick Kirke will continue the quest in my mortal absense. As with the 1869 15c and 24c used inverts such animals most likely do not exist in the real world. |
