Owner's Comments:
This beautiful set of six, turn-of-the-century stamps, is among the most popular of all U.S. commemoratives issued by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing. Maybe it's because, within those small sized picture frames, so much intricate detail was carved out by the art designers. Maybe it's also because it was the first set of bi-colored commemorative stamps issued by the U.S. Government. The Pan-American Exposition of 1901, held in Buffalo, New York, was a tribute to the economic, social and engineering advancements made by North, Central and South America during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. Stamps issued to commemorate the event carried pictures featuring this country's advances in transportation. The one detail that strikes us most often when looking at this set, is how the center vignettes in black, jump out within their various colored borders. And what borders they are!! With so much detail carved into such a small design, especially when compared next to the previously issued 'giant like' Columbians and Trans-Mississippis, it's easy to see why these seemingly delicate stamps are among the most beloved of all U.S. commemoratives.
