Owner's Comments: This set of 16 stamps, issued to commemorate the 400 year anniversary since the discovery of America by Columbus, has and always will be my favorite set in all of U.S. philately. A few of these stamps have some of the most beautiful designs and art work ever issued by the U.S. The most striking in the set would have to be the 1 cent issue in Deep Blue with Columbus Sighting Land, the 3 cent issue in Green with Columbus' Flag Ship, the Santa Maria (my all time favorite in the set), the 4 cent issue in Ultramarine showing all three ships of his tiny fleet taking on the vastness and dangers of ocean travel, and lastly, the $5 dollar issue in Black with the profile bust of Columbus, the man brave enough to travel across the Atlantic no less than four times!! These four stamps if found mint, on bright white paper, with deep colors and sharp impressions, make for quite a sight matched only in beauty by some of the issues in the later Trans-Mississippi commemorative set. |
